Part of the autonomic nervous system that acts to balance the sympathetic nervous system (i.e., the sympathetic system speeds up heart rate and breathing while the parasympathetic system slows it down); the parasympathetic system mostly uses acetylcholine, whereas the sympathetic system mostly uses norepinephrine.
