His well-known The Disease Concept of Alcoholism delineated five levels of alcoholism: alpha (problem drinking), beta (problem drinking with health problems), gamma (loss of control with severe health and social consequences), delta (long-term heavy drinking), and epsilon (periodic) alcoholism.
