An area of the old brain and the peripheral nervous system that reacts to danger by increasing alertness, releasing adrenaline, and raising heart rate and respiration. It is initially triggered by emotional memories and instinctual drives in the amygdala and the hippocampus. Also called fright/fight/flight/fornication center.
