amphetamines

A class of powerful stimulants based on the amphetamine molecule that was first synthesized in 1887 and manufactured in the 1930s; the word is also used to include various methamphetamines. Amphetamines are prescribed for narcolepsy, ADHD, and, until the early 1970s, obesity and depression.
