A progressive impulse-control disorder characterized by: a preoccupation with and a compulsion to bet increasing amounts of money on games of chance; continued gambling despite financial, work-related, and relationship problems; compulsion to chase losses; use of illegal acts or lying to get money with which to bet; and extreme denial that there is a problem. Compulsive gambling is often divided into problem gambling and the severest form, pathological gambling.
