Embedded in the old brain, it receives signals through the fasciculus retroflexus from the left prefrontal cortex, the stop switch for the reward control pathway that is activated by psychoactive drugs. It normally stops the release of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens and other areas of the circuit, but this function is disrupted by the drugs.
