Methamphetamine was first synthesized in the late 1800’s but its pharmacological effects weren’t discovered until the late 1930’s. A wide variety of meth isomers, analogs and congeners have been available since the identification of its CNS stimulatory effects. Two previous distinct eras of methamphetamine or ‘speed’ abuse occurred during the 1940’s and in the 1960’s. Then, in 1989 a report from Honolulu, Hawaii on the abuse of a new form of Methamphetamine particularly amongst Asian American youths ushered in the “Ice Age”. The abuse of methamphetamine has risen dramatically especially in the western states over the past decade and the dextro-isomer form is now the most common form manufactured by street chemist. Data from Monitoring the Future 2004 demonstrate that the use of methamphetamine by the time that a US youth reaches their senior year in high school had increased 50% from 1990 to 2004.
