A psychedelic drug first used as an anesthetic for people and then for animals, but the side effects were too outlandish. As a street drug, starting in the 1960s, it was smoked, snorted, swallowed, and injected; it distorted sensory messages, deadened pain, and suppressed inhibitions. Excessive use can cause catatonia, coma, and convulsions.
