The basic philosophy of Uppers, Downers, All Arounders is that alcohol and other drug use, abuse, and addiction are related to heredity, environment, and the actions of alcohol, other drugs, and behavioral addictions. The content concentrates first on the pharmacology and neurochemistry of these substances and behaviors and then on their historical, social, and psychological contexts.
